Permute's Workshop
Permute’s Workshop is a great way for Permute to offer less frequently used tools. Permute’s intention is to be a Swiss army knife of conversions, allowing you to get anything done. Permute’s Workshop allows Permute to be extended beyond simple conversions. By default, the workshop modules are not enabled by default, but one can easily enable them up in preferences.
To access the Workshop, use the “Permute’s Workshop” button in the bottom-left corner of the main window, or select Window > Show Permute's Workshop in the menu bar. The Workshop window will contain a list of enabled modules and will allow you to interact with them. Follow on-screen instructions on individual modules to work with them.
Starting with Permute 3.6, some Workshop modules can handle certain file types automatically when they are dropped onto Permute’s window (or selected via the open dialog, etc.). Modules that handle uniquely defined files (such as the Cue Cutter with .cue files) will automatically handle these files without even having to be enabled in the preferences.
Here is a quick overview of workshop modules currently bundled with Permute:
- Apply PDF Filter - this allows you to apply various filters to PDF files, including file size reduction. These filters are part of macOS and can be edited or added via the ColorSync Utility that’s part of macOS.
- Audio to Video - combines an image with an audio file, resulting in a video with a still image.
- Color Replacement - this module allows you to replace a color with another color. This can be used to e.g. remove green screen (replace it with clear color). The resulting format is currently always ProRes.
- File Cutter - if you have a WAV file (or any other) that contains multiple tracks, defined in a
.cue(or.edl) file, this is what you’ve been looking for - drop in the.cue(or.edl) file and let Permute split it up for you. - HLS Generator - lets you define resolutions and create HLS Streams for your website.
- IP Camera H.264 Fix-Up - some IP cameras produce a
.264video files that are not playable anywhere, or the playback is not easily achievable. Permute can fix these files for you. - MP4 Web Optimization - some MP4 files can have the
MooVatom located at the end of the file. This is fine for local playback, but is less optimal for embedding these videos on a webpage as the video needs to fully load before it can be played. This workshop module moves the atom to the front of the file, allowing playback while still loading. Note that Permute’s presets that produce MP4 files already produce files withmoovatoms at the beginning of the file. - Metadata Editor - allows you to edit metadata of MP4-based (MP4, M4A, …) and MP3 files.
- Multi-Preset - converts the same file using multiple presets (e.g. if you need multiple sizes, etc).
- PDF Merge - merges multiple PDF files into a single one.
- PDF to Images - this module allows you to export each page of a PDF file as an image. Generally the opposite of the merge functionality.
- Text Encoding Conversion - converts encoding of text files. Works with
.txtand.srtfiles. - Text to Speech - converts text to an audio file.
- Track Export - allows you to export individual tracks of the video.
- Video to Images - allows you to export frames of a video as images.
